The Happy Couponer Marketplace is a proud sponsor of Cobra BMX Racing here in Columbus, Ohio. During the 2016 Racing Season we donated $500.00 to our local track to help with things like track and equipment maintenance, trophies and prizes. This year we’re hoping to double that donation by kicking in some prizes, too.
Why We Love Cobra BMX Racing
It gets kids off the couch and away from the video games. We’ve talked to dozens of BMX moms and this is the biggest reason they love BMX!
All kids like to ride bikes. If you’ve tried getting your kids involved in other types of organized sports but they’re just not interested, try BMX racing. There isn’t a kid in the world who doesn’t love to ride a bike!
It’s open to kids of all genders and ages. We’ve seen boys and girls as young as 2 years old competing on their balance bikes and ‘kids’ as old as 45 and 50 riding just as hard and fast as the ‘teens and ‘tweens.
No experience necessary. If your kid can ride a bike he can ride on a BMX track. Kids race in motos that are based on their age and experience level. Beginners are always welcome!
It’s good, clean fun. Trust me, BMX riders couldn’t compete if they were smokers or doing drugs or drinking. Your kids won’t be associating with any riff-raff at the BMX track. In fact, they might even be on TV!
It doesn’t cost a lot to get started. Our kids started on Walmart bikes, with jeans, sweatshirts and a cheap helmet, so you can find out if your kids will like it without having to invest a lot of money.
It gets kids off the streets and gives them a safe place to run off that energy. One of the biggest reasons kids don’t play outside anymore is there really aren’t any ‘safe’ places to play, other than their own boring backyard.
It teaches your kids how to socialize. BMX racers – of all ages – are the friendliest bunch of people! Older, experienced bikers love helping the new kids and if you child is shy – he or she won’t be for long once you start hanging out at BMX tracks.
It teaches your kids how to compete but still be friends. You hear “Get outta my way!” and “Move over!” as the riders race around the track but once they cross the finish line they’re clapping and high-fiving each other and laughing about who’s going to win the next race.
It teaches your kids about goal-setting. At our track, the only time you get a trophy just for participating is when you run your very first race. After that, if you want a trophy… you have to eeeaaarrrrnnnn it. And that’s the way it should be!
BMX Racing is an Olympic event!
BMX Racing became an official event at the 2008 Olympics. Connor Fields of the USA took home the Gold Medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. If your kid really enjoys BMX racing he can compete locally, statewide, and nationally. Your kid might even get a sponsor and he or she could even make it to the Olympics!
